What is Metronidazole and how does it work?

Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and a type of microorganism called protozoa.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is characterized by an overgrowth of predominantly anaerobic organisms and a loss of lactobacilli. Metronidazole is an effective treatment choice for BV due to its high activity against anaerobic bacteria.

Additional Information

How should I take Metronidazole?

Before taking Metronidazole, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information about the tablets and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience from taking them.

The recommended dose for Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is 400mg twice daily for 5-7 days. It is important to complete the course even if you feel better to prevent the infection coming back.

Metronidazole should be taken with a snack or just after eating a meal to prevent gastrointestinal side effects. Tablets should be swallowed whole with a drink of water.

It is important to not drink alcohol while you are taking Metronidazole and for 48 hours after finishing your course of treatment. This is because drinking alcohol with Metronidazole is likely to make you feel very sick and cause other unpleasant effects, such as palpitations, hot flushes and headache.

While you are taking Metronidazole, your urine may look a darker colour than normal.

If you forget to take a dose at the right time, take it as soon as you remember. Try to take the correct number of doses each day but do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.

Stop taking Metronidazole and seek immediate medical attention if:

  • You develop swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, face, lips or throat which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing.
You may also notice an itchy, lumpy rash (hives) or nettle rash (urticaria). This may mean you are having an allergic reaction to Metronidazole
  • You develop a fever, stiff neck, headache or see or hear things that aren’t there. You might also have problems using your arms and legs, problems with speaking or feel confused. These may be symptoms of a serious but very rare side effect called encephalopathy
  • You develop skin rashes including Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis. These can appear as reddish target-like spots or circular patches often with central blisters on the trunk, skin peeling, ulcers of the mouth, throat, nose, genitals and eyes and can be preceded by fever and flu-like symptoms
  • You develop a red, scaly widespread rash with bumps under the skin and blisters accompanied by fever at the initiation of treatment (acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis)
  • You notice any yellowing of the skin or eyes. This could be due to a liver problem (jaundice)
  • You develop any unexpected infections, mouth ulcers, bruising, bleeding gums, or severe tiredness. This could be caused by a blood problem
  • You develop severe stomach pain which may reach through to your back (pancreatitis)
  • You suffer fits (convulsions)
  • You develop mental problems such as feeling confused and seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • You have problems with your eyesight such as blurred or double vision
  • You start feeling sleepy or dizzy
  • You develop pains in the muscles or joints

Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Metronidazole can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Metronidazole. In the event of a medical emergency, you should tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse that you have taken Metronidazole and when you did. Do not take Metronidazole with other medicines unless your doctor tells you that you can.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • Medicines used to thin the blood such as Warfarin
  • Lithium (for mental illness)
  • Phenobarbital or Phenytoin (for epilepsy)
  • 5-Fluorouracil (for cancer)
  • Busulfan (for leukaemia)
  • Ciclosporin (to prevent the rejection of organs after transplant)
  • Disulfiram (for alcoholism)

Do not take Metronidazole:

  • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Metronidazole or any of the ingredients listed in the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with your medication

Warnings & Precautions

While you are taking Metronidazole, your urine may look a darker colour than normal.

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking Metronidazole if:

  • You have a disorder of the nervous system
  • You have a rare genetic disorder known as Cockayne Syndrome
  • You are currently undergoing kidney dialysis
  • You have or have ever had a liver problem

Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, & Fertility

  • Metronidazole should not be taken during pregnancy unless considered absolutely necessary
  • It is better not to use Metronidazole if you are breastfeeding. This is because small amounts may pass into the mother’s milk

Driving and using machinery

While taking Metronidazole you may feel sleepy, dizzy, confused, see or hear things that are not there (hallucinations), have fits (convulsions) or temporary eyesight problems (such as blurred or double vision). If this happens, do not drive or use any machinery or tools.
