Period delay treatments, such as Norethisterone and Medroxyprogesterone, provide an effective solution for women looking to postpone their menstrual cycle for important events or special occasions.

Period Delay treatments, such as Norethisterone, offer a valuable option for women who wish to postpone their menstrual cycle due to significant events or occasions.
Norethisterone works by artificially maintaining elevated levels of Progesterone in the body, which prevents the shedding of the womb lining and thereby delays the onset of menstruation. This treatment should be started three days before the expected start date of the period and can be used for up to 20 days.
It is important to note that while Norethisterone can effectively delay periods, it does not serve as a contraceptive and should be used in conjunction with other contraceptive methods if pregnancy prevention is desired. Additionally, it is not suitable for women with certain medical conditions, such as a history of blood clots or liver issues.
Alternatives, such as Medroxyprogesterone, may be considered for women with specific health concerns or higher risk profiles.
There are times when having your period can feel particularly inconvenient, such as during an important exam, a major holiday, or a special occasion like a wedding. Taking treatment to delay your period in these situations can help you avoid unnecessary frustration and stress.
Norethisterone (Utovlan)
During a woman’s menstrual cycle, the levels of Oestrogen and Progesterone fluctuate. Just before a period begins, there is a drop in Progesterone levels, which triggers menstruation.
Norethisterone is a synthetic form of the female hormone Progesterone. It works by artificially maintaining high Progesterone levels, this in turn prevents the womb lining from shedding and thus delays your period.
Norethisterone is taken three times daily for Period Delay and should be started 3 days before the expected start date of your period. You should continue taking the tablets for as long as you wish to delay your period, up to a maximum of 20 days in total (meaning you can delay your period for up to 17 days). After you stop taking the tablets, your period will likely start after two or three days, although this timeline can vary for each individual.
Norethisterone will alter the dates of your menstrual cycle. By taking Norethisterone, your period will be delayed by up to 17 days, depending on how long you take it. The day your period restarts is your new cycle date. You can expect your next period to occur approximately 30 days after this new start date.
Norethisterone can have a number of other benefits. Not only can it change when your period occurs, it can also make your bleeding lighter and your period less painful. The additional hormones can also help to reduce the number and severity of premenstrual symptoms, such as mood swings, bloating/stomach aches, headaches, or changes to your skin or hair.
A few women may suffer light bleeding or spotting whilst taking Period Delay treatment, but the vast majority will not experience any bleeding at all.
Norethisterone does not function as a contraceptive when taken for Period Delay, so it is therefore important to continue to use contraceptive methods if you do not wish to become pregnant. You should not take Norethisterone if you are already using the Combined Contraceptive Pill.
Norethisterone should not be used to delay your period more than once every six months.
Norethisterone is not suitable for women with a history of blood clots, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or liver or heart problems. Additionally, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take Norethisterone.
Alternative Treatments
An alternative way of delaying your period if you already take the Monophasic Combined Contraceptive Pill, is to run two strips back-to-back without taking the normal 7-day break. This will not work if you have just started taking the pill – Norethisterone should be used to delay your period instead.
The mechanism by which the pill prevents a period is similar to that of Norethisterone: it keeps levels of Progesterone high, thus preventing shedding of the womb lining. Please note that the Progestogen-Only Pill (POP), also known as the Mini-Pill, cannot be used in this way to delay periods.
Medroxyprogesterone is an alternative treatment option to Norethisterone for women with a BMI over 30 or those are aged over 35, where there may be a higher risk of side effects from taking Norethisterone.
