Hair Loss (Male Pattern Baldness)

Male Pattern Baldness, or androgenic alopecia, is a common genetic condition causing progressive hair loss in men, often starting with a receding hairline or thinning at the crown. While not a health risk, it can affect self-esteem, but treatments like Finasteride, Dutasteride, and Minoxidil can help slow hair loss and promote regrowth, especially with early intervention.

Male Pattern Baldness, or androgenic alopecia, is a common genetic condition characterised by progressive hair loss in men. This condition typically begins with a receding hairline and thinning at the crown, eventually leading to significant bald patches or complete baldness. It is caused by the action of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of testosterone, which affects hair follicles and impedes hair growth.

Though not a sign of illness, Male Pattern Baldness can impact self-esteem and emotional wellbeing. Effective management options, including medications like Finasteride and Minoxidil, can slow hair loss and, in some cases, stimulate regrowth. Early intervention and proper hair and scalp care are essential for optimising treatment outcomes.

Hair loss is simply defined as the partial or complete absence of hair from areas on the body where it normally grows. This condition is medically known as alopecia and can also be referred to as baldness. Alopecia can affect both men and women of all ages. There are various types of alopecia, each with distinct causes and symptoms.

The most common cause of hair loss is Male Pattern Baldness, also known as Androgenic Alopecia. This genetic condition affects about half of men by the age of 50, although some may suffer as early as their 20s.

Male Pattern Baldness gets its name from the characteristic pattern of hair loss that men typically experience. This often starts with a receding hairline, followed by thinning of the hair on the crown and temples, eventually leading to the merging of bald patches. The balding process usually takes 15-25 years, but this can occur more rapidly in some individuals.

Male Pattern Baldness is not dangerous, but it can cause significant self-consciousness, potentially leading to low self-esteem and depression. Treatment for hair loss is typically only pursued for cosmetic reasons. If the hair loss does not cause any emotional distress, treatment is not usually necessary.

Male Pattern Baldness is a genetic condition that occurs when cells in the skin of the scalp convert Testosterone into another hormone called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Exposure to DHT causes hair follicles to shrink, weaken, and eventually stop functioning, preventing hair growth.

Male-pattern baldness is normally hereditary and is not indicative of disease or ill health. There are several effective treatment options available for managing hair loss in men.

While there is no cure for Male Pattern Baldness, there are effective treatments available that are proven to slow the rate of hair loss and in some cases stimulate regrowth. Other options for managing hair loss include wigs and surgical hair transplants/procedures.

Finasteride (Propecia) & Dutasteride (Avodart)

Finasteride and Dutasteride belong to a class of medications known as 5α-Reductase Inhibitors (5-ARIs). These medicines work by inhibiting the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the enzyme 5α-Reductase. This inhibition reduces the level of DHT which has a harmful effect on hair follicles.

When taken daily, these medications can be extremely effective in reversing the effects of Male Pattern Baldness. They help prevent hair follicle thinning and are even thought to increase hair density, improving overall appearance. In one study, 90% of men who took Finasteride once a day for six months halted their hair loss, and 60% even experienced regrowth of lost hair.

These medications normally take three to six months of consistent use before any noticeable effect is observed and up to one to two years for full hair growth, this is because of the natural growth cycles of hair follicles. 5-ARIs are not a permanent solution to hair loss, so any positive effects will be reversed if treatment is stopped.

Minoxidil (Regaine)

The exact mechanism of Minoxidil in treating hair loss is not fully understood, however, it is thought to act as a vasodilator, stimulating blood flow to the scalp. This enhanced circulation helps deliver nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles, promoting hair growth, thickness, and density. Minoxidil is also believed to boost the production of enzymes that extend the life of hair follicles.

Minoxidil is available as a topical foam or lotion that is rubbed into the scalp every day. Minoxidil needs to be used for several months before results are visible and if treatment is stopped then the balding process usually resumes within a few months.

Minoxidil is most effective when used early, as soon as hair thinning begins, rather than after significant hair loss has occurred. It is generally more successful in preventing further hair loss, though some users do experience hair regrowth. Minoxidil is available over the counter without a prescription.

Preventing hair loss can sometimes be beyond your control. Genetic factors can mean it is programmed into your genes to lose your hair. The best approach to adopt is to start treatment early and take good care of your hair and scalp by:

  • Not subjecting it to constant or extreme heating or drying procedures
  • Reducing the amount of dyeing your hair undergoes
  • Being careful about over-styling and the products you use. Some styles require the hair to be pulled tightly with clasps, clips and elastics. This can cause hair loss if done on a daily basis
  • Washing your hair regularly using a mild shampoo and avoid brushing when the hair is wet
  • Avoiding rubbing vigorously with a towel when drying. Instead, gently pat dry
  • Brush the hair using a soft bristled comb or brush
  • Eating a nutritious, balanced diet. A healthy body is more likely to have healthy, stronger hair
  • Avoiding stress where possible
  • Getting plenty of sleep and exercise
  • Considering stimulating the scalp with a weekly scalp massage
