Effective Migraine treatment

Rapid action

 Triptan medication

Constricts blood vessels in the brain

What is Frovatriptan and how does it work?

Frovatriptan belongs to a class of medicines called Triptans (also known as 5-HT1 receptor agonists).

Triptans are used to treat Migraine attacks (with or without aura), where there is a confirmed diagnosis of Migraine.

Migraine symptoms are thought to result from the temporary widening (vasodilation) of blood vessels in the head. Triptans work by binding to specific receptors in these blood vessels, causing them to constrict in a process called vasoconstriction, which helps alleviate the painful dilation. Additionally, Triptans are believed to reduce the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals in the brain that contribute to the symptoms of a Migraine attack.

Additional Information

How should I take Frovatriptan?

Before taking Frovatriptan, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information about Frovatriptan and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience from taking it.

It is recommended to take the first dose of Frovatriptan as soon as you sense the headache (pain) beginning to develop, but not before this stage. Frovatriptan should not be used to prevent a Migraine attack; it should only be taken once symptoms start.

The usual adult dose using oral tablets is 2.5mg, swallowed whole with water. If the first dose was effective but headache symptoms recur, a second dose may be given provided at least 2 hours have passed since the first dose. No more than 5mg should be taken in any 24-hour period. You should not take a second dose for the same attack if the first dose has no effect.

Frovatriptan is not licensed for use in patients aged over 65.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.

Stop taking Frovatriptan and seek medical help immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

  • Feeling of tightness or pain in the chest, shortness of breath and/or pain or discomfort in one or both arms, your back, shoulders, neck, jaw, or upper part of the stomach; these might be symptoms of a heart attack, which can occur when taking Triptans, even in patients with no history of cardiovascular disease
  • Generalized skin rash and itching, rapid-onset swelling (especially around the lips, eyes, or of the tongue and mucosa), with possible sudden difficulty in breathing and a fast heartbeat and thumping heart. These are all symptoms and signs of allergy and whole-body hypersensitivity reaction (hypersensitivity reactions, angioedema, anaphylaxis)

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)

  • Nausea, dry mouth, digestion problems, stomach pain
  • Fatigue, chest discomfort (sensation of slight heaviness, pressure or tightness in the chest)
  • Headache, dizziness, sensation of pins and needles, most frequently in the arms and legs, reduction or disturbance of the sensations of touch, extreme sleepiness
  • Hot flushes
  • Tightness in the throat
  • Sight disturbances
  • Increased sweating

Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Frovatriptan can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Frovatriptan. In the event of a medical emergency, you should tell your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse that you have taken Frovatriptan and when you did. Do not take Frovatriptan with other medicines unless your doctor tells you that you can.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • Ergotamine also used to treat Migraine, or similar medicines such as Methysergide
  • Other Triptans/5-HT1 receptor agonists (such as Naratriptan, Rizatriptan, Zolmitriptan)
  • MAOIs used to treat depression
  • SSRIs and SNRIs used to treat depression
  • Oral contraceptives
  • St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

Do not take Frovatriptan:

  • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Frovatriptan, other Triptans, Sulphonamide medications or any of the ingredients listed in the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with your medication. Signs of a hypersensitivity reaction include swelling of the face and mouth (angioedema), breathing problems, chest pain, runny nose, skin rash or any other allergic type reaction
  • If you have a heart problem such as narrowing of the arteries (Ischaemic heart disease) or chest pains (angina), or have already had a heart attack
  • If you have circulation problems in your legs that cause cramp-like pains when you walk (peripheral vascular disease)
  • If you have had a stroke or a mini-stroke (also called a transient ischaemic attack or TIA)
  • If you have high blood pressure. You may be able to use Frovatriptan if your high blood pressure is mild and is being treated
  • If you have serious liver disease
  • With other Migraine medicines, including those which contain Ergotamine, or similar medicines such as Methysergide; or any Triptan or 5HT1 agonist (such as Rizatriptan or Zolmitriptan)
  • With MAOI anti-depressants or if you have taken an MAOI in the last 2 weeks

Warnings & Precautions

Please note that prolonged or frequent use of Frovatriptan may make your headaches worse.

  • If you have a history of fits (seizures) or if you have other conditions which might make it more likely that you’ll have a fit – for example, a head injury or alcoholism: tell your prescriber so that you can be supervised more closely
  • If you have high blood pressure
  • If you have liver or kidney disease
  • If you have an intolerance to some sugars
  • If you are allergic to Sulphonamide medications

  • Breastfeeding should be avoided for 24 hours after taking Frovatriptan, any milk expressed during this time should be discarded
