✔ Used to prevent Altitude Sickness
✔ Improves the rate of acclimatisation
✔ Reduces fluid build-up within the lungs
✔ Not a substitute for proper acclimatisation
✔ Previously known as Diamox
Acetazolamide belongs to a group of medicines called Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibitors.
Acetazolamide prevents and relieves symptoms of altitude sickness by increasing the rate of acclimatisation. It acts by altering the acidity of the blood to enhance ventilation of the lungs. This increases the level of oxygen in the blood and reduces fluid build-up within the lungs and around the brain.
Acetazolamide is available from PrescriptionPad as 250mg Tablets and is prescribed ‘off-label’ for the prevention of altitude sickness.
Before taking Acetazolamide, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information about the tablets and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience from taking them.
The usual recommended dose for the prevention of altitude sickness is 125mg (HALF a tablet) taken TWICE daily starting 1-2 days prior to ascent. Treatment should be stopped two days after reaching the highest point of elevation.
Acetazolamide is best taken with a drink of water, just before or just after a meal.
If you accidently take more Acetazolamide than prescribed, you should get immediate medical help.
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome.
All medicines can cause allergic reactions although serious allergic reactions are very rare. Any sudden wheeziness, difficulty in breathing, swelling of the eyelids, face or lips, rash or itching (especially affecting your whole body) should be reported to a doctor immediately.
Acetazolamide can affect the cells in your blood. This could mean that you are more likely to catch infections and that your blood may not clot properly. If you have a sore throat or fever or you notice bruises or tiny red or purple spots on your skin, you should contact your doctor immediately. If your muscles feel weak or you have fits, you should see your doctor immediately.
Acetazolamide can affect the liver and kidneys. If you experience pain in your lower back, pain or burning when you pass urine, have difficulty in passing urine, or you stop passing urine, have blood in your urine, pale stools, or if your skin or eyes look slightly yellow, you should contact your doctor. You should also contact your doctor if your stools are black or tarry, or if you notice blood in your stools.
Below is a list of side effects associated with Acetazolamide. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.
Rare cases of skin rashes including an increased sensitivity to sunlight have been reported. If you experience any unusual skin rashes, inform your doctor. Contact a doctor immediately if you experience a serious skin reaction; a red, scaly rash with bumps under the skin and blisters (exanthematous pustulosis).
If you take Acetazolamide for a long time it can occasionally affect the amount of potassium, or sodium in your blood. Your doctor should conduct blood tests to check that this does not happen. You might also experience bone thinning or kidney stones with long-term therapy. High or low blood sugar levels may occasionally occur.
If any side effects become serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in the Patient Information leaflet (PIL), please tell your doctor or pharmacist.
Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Acetazolamide can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Acetazolamide. In the event of a medical emergency, you should tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse that you have taken Acetazolamide tablets and when you did.
It is especially important that you tell the prescriber if you take any of the following medication:
Do not take Acetazolamide:
Warnings & Precautions
Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking Acetazolamide:
Acetazolamide may affect some medical tests. If you visit a hospital or clinic for any medical tests, you should tell the doctor concerned that you are taking Acetazolamide.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Acetazolamide SHOULD NOT be taken if you are pregnant, think you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant.
It may be taken when breastfeeding but only on the advice of your doctor.
Driving and using machinery
If Acetazolamide makes you feel drowsy or confused, you should not drive or operate machines. Acetazolamide can occasionally cause short-sightedness; if this happens and you feel that you can no longer drive safely, you should stop driving and contact your doctor.
