Avodart contains the active ingredient Dutasteride which belongs to a class of medications known as 5α-Reductase Inhibitors (5-ARIs). These medicines work by inhibiting the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the enzyme 5α-Reductase.
Exposure to DHT causes hair follicles to shrink, weaken, and eventually stop functioning, preventing hair growth. Avodart acts to reduce levels of DHT in the scalp, helping to reverse the balding process and prevent further hair loss.
When taken daily, Avodart can be highly effective in reversing the effects of Male Pattern Baldness. It helps prevent the thinning of hair follicles and is even thought to increase the number of hairs, thereby enhancing the overall appearance.
5-ARIs normally take three to six months of consistent use before any effects are observed and up to one to two years for full hair growth, this is due to the natural growth cycles of hair follicles. 5-ARIs are not a permanent solution to hair loss, so any positive effects will be reversed if treatment is stopped.
Before taking Avodart, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information about the capsules and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience from taking them.
The recommended dose is one capsule (0.5mg) daily. Capsules should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken on an empty stomach or with a meal. Do not chew or break open the capsule. Contact with the contents of the capsules may make your mouth or throat sore. Taking more than the recommended dose will not increase the effectiveness of treatment.
Male pattern hair loss is a condition that develops over a long period of time. In general, daily use for three to six months may be necessary before you notice any increase in hair density or reduction in hair loss. If you stop taking Avodart, you are likely to lose the hair you have gained within 9 to 12 months.
If you accidently take more Avodart than prescribed, you may experience an increase in side effects and their severity. Contact your doctor if you take more capsules than you should.
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome.
