Used to treat Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Branded version of Tadalafil

Works in 30 minutes

Lasts up to 36 hours

Long acting – allows for sexual spontaneity

What is Cialis and how does it work?

Cialis belongs to a group of medicines called Phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors which are used as a first-line treatment option for Erectile Dysfunction (ED).

PDE5 inhibitors function by relaxing and widening (dilating) blood vessels in your penis. This helps to improve blood flow to the penis when you are sexually aroused. Even if the nerves or blood vessels going to the penis are not working so well, PDE5 inhibitors can increase the blood flow and facilitate an erection.

PDE5 inhibitors have about an 8 in 10 chance of working well, however, it should be noted that they will not cause an erection unless you are sexually aroused or stimulated.

Additional Information

How should I take Cialis?

Cialis is available from PrescriptionPad as 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg Tablets.

Before taking Cialis, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information about the tablets and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience from taking them.

The usual recommended starting dose is 10mg. This can be increased or decreased depending on its effect and how you react.

The amount of time Cialis takes to work varies from person to person, but it normally takes between 15-45 minutes.

Cialis can be used as required or can be taken as a regular lower daily dose to allow for spontaneous (rather than scheduled) sexual activity.

Cialis 10mg or 20mg tablets should only be taken before sexual activity – they are NOT for continuous daily use. You should take one tablet at least half an hour before you plan to have sex (it may still be effective up to 36 hours after taking the tablet).

Cialis 2.5mg or 5mg tablets can be used as required or taken as a continuous daily dose at the same time each day in men who anticipate sexual activity at least twice a week.

You should not take more than one dose of Cialis in any 24-hour period.

You and your partner will still need to engage in foreplay, just as you would if you were not taking a medicine for ED. Cialis will not cause an erection unless you are sexually aroused.

Tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water or juice (but not grapefruit juice). It is recommended that you do not drink grapefruit juice with Cialis as there is a chemical in grapefruit juice which can increase the amount of Cialis in your bloodstream and this makes side-effects more likely. Cialis can be taken with or without food.

You should not drink large amounts of alcohol before you plan to take Cialis. Drinking too much alcohol can reduce your ability to get an erection and this may prevent you from getting the maximum benefit from the tablets.

You should not take Cialis if you are using any other products or taking any other medicines to treat Erectile Dysfunction.

If Cialis tablets do not help you to get an erection or if your erection does not last long enough for satisfactory sexual intercourse, you should inform your doctor. Similarly, if you feel that the tablets are too strong for you, discuss this with your doctor as your dose may need to be reduced.

If you accidently take more Cialis than prescribed, you may experience an increase in side effects and their severity. Contact your doctor if you take more tablets than you should.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome.

Below is a list of the most common and the most serious side effects associated with Cialis. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)

The following more common side effects tend to be mild and of a short duration.

  • Headache
  • Back pain
  • Muscle aches
  • Pain in arms and legs
  • Facial flushing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Indigestion

If you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects, stop taking Cialis and contact a doctor immediately:

  • An allergic reaction – symptoms include sudden wheeziness, difficulty in breathing or dizziness, swelling of the eyelids, face, lips or throat
  • Chest pains – if this occurs during or after intercourse get in a semi-sitting position and try to relax. Do not use Nitrates to treat your chest pain
  • Prolonged and sometimes painful erections – if you have an erection which lasts for more than 4 hours, you should contact a doctor immediately
  • A sudden decrease or loss of vision
  • Serious skin reactions – symptoms may include severe peeling and swelling of the skin, blistering of the mouth, genitals and around the eyes, fever
  • Seizures or fits

Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Cialis can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Cialis. In the event of a medical emergency, you should tell your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse that you have taken Cialis tablets and when you did. Do not take Cialis tablets with other medicines unless your doctor tells you that you can.

You should not take Cialis if you are taking medicines called Nitrates such as Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN), as the combination of these medicines may potentially lead to a dangerous fall in your blood pressure. Always tell your prescriber if you are taking any of these medicines that are often used for the relief of angina. You should also avoid taking Cialis if you are using Nitric Oxide Donors such as Amyl Nitrite (Poppers).

Patients that take Alpha-blockers (Doxazosin, Indoramin, Terazosin or Prazosin) for the treatment of high blood pressure or prostate enlargement may experience dizziness or light-headedness caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure. In order to reduce the chance of these symptoms occurring, patients should be on a stabilised, regular daily dose of their Alpha-blocker before taking Cialis.

Tell us if you are taking any of the following:

  • Medicines to treat high blood pressure
  • Riociguat used to treat Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH)
  • 5α-Reductase Inhibitors such as Finasteride used to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Medicines such as Ketoconazole (used to treat fungal infections) and Protease Inhibitors for the treatment of AIDS or HIV infection
  • Phenobarbital, Phenytoin and Carbamazepine (Anticonvulsant medicines)
  • Rifampicin, Erythromycin, Clarithromycin or Itraconazole
  • Other treatments for Erectile Dysfunction

Do not take Cialis:

  • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Tadalafil or any of the other ingredients of Cialis (listed in the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with your medication)
  • If you are taking medicines called Nitrates (for angina/chest pain) or Nitric Oxide Donors such as Amyl Nitrite (‘Poppers’), as the combination may lead to a dangerous fall in your blood pressure
  • If you are taking a medicine called Riociguat used to treat Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH)
  • If you have a severe heart or liver problem
  • If you have had a stroke within the last 6 months or a heart attack within the last 90 days
  • If you have low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • If you have certain rare inherited eye diseases (such as retinitis pigmentosa)
  • If you have ever had loss of vision due to Non-arteritic Anterior Ischaemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION)

  • If you have a deformity of your penis, Peyronie’s Disease or persistent erections lasting more than 4 hours

  • Decreased or sudden hearing loss has been noted in some patients taking Cialis. Although it is not known if the event is directly related to Cialis, if you experience decreased or sudden hearing loss, stop taking Cialis and contact your doctor immediately.
