✔ Effective treatment for Gout attacks
✔ Eases most attacks in 1-2 days
✔ Reduces inflammation and relieves pain
✔ Alternative to NSAIDs
Colchicine is an anti-gout medication that works by disrupting the inflammatory process involved during a Gout flare.
Colchicine is particularly useful when NSAIDs are poorly tolerated, in patients with heart failure, and in those who are on anticoagulants. The sooner that medication is started, the more rapid the response. Many people with Gout like to have a supply of tablets on standby just in case an attack occurs. They are usually needed only for a few days until the inflammation and pain subside.
Before taking Colchicine, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information about Colchicine and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience from taking it.
The recommended dose for the treatment of Acute Gout is 500micrograms (1 tablet) 2–4 times a day until symptoms are relieved, up to a maximum of 6mg (12 tablets) per course. After completion of a course, you should not start another course for at least three days. The maximum dose is often limited by gastrointestinal side effects, most frequently abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea, and vomiting.
If you are a woman of childbearing potential, do not take this medicine unless you are using effective contraception.
Colchicine is severely toxic and can be fatal in overdose. If you have accidently taken more than the prescribed dose or are experiencing symptoms of overdose you should urgently seek medical attention. Early symptoms of overdose (which appear on average after 3 hours but can take longer) may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, bloody diarrhoea, and low blood pressure.
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.
There is only a slight difference between an effective dose of Colchicine and an overdose. Therefore, if you get symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhoea, stop taking Colchicine and immediately contact your doctor.
If you develop symptoms such as fever, inflammation of the mouth, sore throat, prolonged bleeding, bruising, or skin problems, stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately. These could be signs that you have a serious blood problem and your doctor may want you to have blood tests straight away.
Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Colchicine can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Colchicine. In the event of a medical emergency, you should tell your doctor, pharmacist or nurse that you have taken Colchicine and when you did. Do not take Colchicine with other medicines unless your doctor tells you that you can.
When Colchicine is taken together with any of the following medicines, side effects due to Colchicine toxicity are more likely and these can be serious and life-threatening:
If you are taking any of the above medicines, your prescriber may want to adjust your dose of Colchicine or temporarily stop your treatment with Colchicine. If you have liver or kidney problems and you are taking any of the above medicines, you should not take Colchicine.
It is also important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:
Do not take Colchicine:

These could be signs that you have a serious blood problem and your doctor may want you to have blood tests straight away.
Colchicine can cause a serious decrease in bone marrow function leading to a decrease in certain white blood cells (agranulocytosis), a decrease in red blood cells and pigment (aplastic anaemia), and/or a low blood platelet count (thrombocytopenia). You should have regular blood tests to monitor any changes if taking Colchicine for prolonged periods.
Grapefruit juice may increase the amount of Colchicine in your blood. Therefore, you should not drink grapefruit juice whilst you are taking Colchicine.
