Used to treat Acid Reflux & Heartburn

Fast and highly effective inhibition of stomach acid secretion

Rapid absorption and relief of symptoms

Alternative to Ranitidine

Also known by the brand name Pepcid

What is Famotidine and how does it work?

Famotidine belongs to a group of medicines called Histamine H2-Receptor Antagonists which reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Histamine is a chemical that is naturally produced by certain cells in the body, including cells in the lining of the stomach called enterochromaffin-like cells (ECL cells). Histamine released from ECL cells stimulates the acid-producing parietal cells in the stomach lining to release acid. H2-Receptor Antagonists prevent this stimulation thus reducing the amount of acid produced and the resulting aggravating symptoms.

H2-Receptor Antagonists are widely used for the treatment of acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion. They can also be used to help prevent ulcers from forming or to assist healing in cases where ulcer formation has already occurred. H2-Receptor Antagonists are also given in combination with appropriate antibiotics for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori (a type of bacteria that can cause ulcers in the lining of the stomach by weakening the protective mucus coating of the stomach). H2-Receptor Antagonists are sometimes taken for a rare illness called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome in which the stomach produces too much acid due to a tumour in the pancreas or upper part of the small intestine.

Additional Information

How should I take Famotidine?

It is recommended that Famotidine tablets be swallowed whole with a glass of water before or after meals. Famotidine can be taken with or without food, however, if you get symptoms whenever you eat or drink, it is advisable to take it 30-60 minutes before having a drink, snack or meal.

If you accidentally take more Famotidine than prescribed, contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department immediately.

If you forget to take a dose at your usual time, you can take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome.

Below is a list of the most common and the most serious side effects associated with Famotidine. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.

Common side effects

Most people who take Famotidine do not suffer any side effects. The following more common side effects tend to be mild and abate when you stop taking Famotidine.

  • Headache/dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea

If any of the following symptoms occur soon after taking Famotidine, stop taking it and tell your doctor immediately:

  • Allergic reactions: swelling of the face, throat or tongue, difficulty in breathing or dizziness (anaphylaxis)
  • Difficulty in breathing or wheezing (bronchospasm)
  • Severe blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes and genitals
  • Shortness of breath or dry cough due to inflammation of the lungs
  • Swelling of the deeper layers of the skin caused by a build-up of fluid

Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Famotidine can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Famotidine.

Famotidine should be avoided with:

  • Neratinib (a tyrosine kinase inhibitor used in breast cancer)
  • Rilpivirine (used in HIV infection)

Tell us if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • Ketoconazole or Itraconazole (used to treat fungal infections)
  • Probenicid (used to treat gout)
  • Antacids (for indigestion)
  • Sucralfate (used to treat and prevent the recurrence of ulcers)
  • Atazanavir (used for the treatment of HIV infection)

Do not take Famotidine:

  • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Famotidine or any of the other ingredients of Famotidine (listed in the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with your medication)
  • If you are breastfeeding
  • If you have taken a similar anti-ulcer medicine before and you suffered an unusual or allergic reaction
  • If you are due to have an endoscopy in the next two weeks

Famotidine isn’t suitable for some people. To make sure that it is safe for you, tell the prescriber if you:

  • Have had an allergic reaction to Famotidine or any other medicines in the past
  • Have kidney/liver problems
  • Have gastric cancer

If you’re due to have an endoscopy to find out what’s causing your symptoms, stop taking Famotidine at least 2 weeks before your procedure. This is because Famotidine may hide some of the problems that would usually be spotted during an endoscopy.

Famotidine should not be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Warnings & Precautions

Famotidine may hide the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following happen to you before you start taking Famotidine or whilst you are taking it, talk to your doctor straightaway:

  • You lose a lot of weight for no reason and have problems swallowing
  • You begin to vomit food or vomit blood
  • You pass black stools (blood-stained faeces)
  • You experience severe or persistent diarrhoea, with symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain or tenderness, as Famotidine has been associated with a small increase in infectious diarrhoea
  • You have severe liver problems
  • You experience stomach pain that seems to be getting worse – this can be a sign of an inflamed liver or pancreas

As with all acid reducing agents, Famotidine may lead to a reduced absorption of Vitamin B12.

Driving and using machinery

Famotidine has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines. If side effects such as dizziness and visual disturbances do occur, you should not drive or operate machinery.
