✔ Used to treat Acid Reflux & Heartburn
✔ Fast and highly effective inhibition of stomach acid secretion
✔ Simple daily dosing provides up to 24 hours of relief
✔ Average reduction in gastric acidity of 80-90%
✔ Rapid absorption and relief of symptoms
Lansoprazole belongs to a group of medicines called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) which reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach by blocking the ‘proton pump’ of parietal cells in the lining of the stomach. This targeted mechanism of action on the final step of acid formation provides for highly effective results.
PPIs are widely used for the treatment of acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion. They can also be used to help prevent ulcers from forming or to assist healing in cases where ulcer formation has already occurred. PPIs can be given in combination with appropriate antibiotics for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori (a type of bacteria that can cause ulcers in the lining of the stomach by weakening the protective mucus coating of the stomach). PPIs are sometimes taken for a rare illness called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome in which the stomach produces too much acid due to a tumour in the pancreas or upper part of the small intestine.
For optimal effect, it is recommended that you take Lansoprazole in the morning at least 30 minutes before food. This is because your body absorbs less Lansoprazole after you have eaten a meal, so the medicine is less effective.
If you have been asked to take two doses daily, take your first dose 30 minutes before breakfast and your second dose in the evening at least half an hour before any food.
Capsules should be swallowed whole with a drink of water. Do not crush or chew the capsules or the contents of an emptied capsule because this will stop them from working properly. For patients with difficulty swallowing, studies and clinical practice suggest that the capsules may be opened and the granules mixed with a small amount of water, apple/tomato juice or sprinkled onto a small amount of soft food (e.g. yoghurt) to ease administration. Alternatively, orodispersible tablets may be a more convenient option.
Indigestion remedies should be avoided during the two hours before or during the two hours after you take Lansoprazole as they can interfere with the way Lansoprazole is absorbed by your body.
If you accidently take more Lansoprazole than prescribed, it is very unlikely to cause any problems. However, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist straight away if you have taken too many and have any of the following symptoms: flushed skin, feeling sweaty, a fast heartbeat, feeling sleepy, blurred vision, feeling confused or agitated.
If you forget to take a dose at your usual time, you can take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome.
Below is a list of the most common and the most serious side effects associated with Lansoprazole. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)
Most people who take Lansoprazole do not suffer any side effects. The following more common side effects tend to be mild and abate when you stop taking Lansoprazole:
If you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects, stop taking Lansoprazole and contact a doctor immediately – you may need urgent medical treatment:
Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Lansoprazole can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Lansoprazole.
Do not take Lansoprazole if you are taking a medicine containing Atazanavir (used in the treatment of HIV).
Tell us if you are taking any of the following medicines:
Do not take Lansoprazole:
Lansoprazole is not usually recommended during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is always better to try to treat your symptoms without taking medication when possible. A medicine called Omeprazole, which is similar to Lansoprazole, is considered safe in pregnancy/breastfeeding so may be a more suitable alternative.
Warnings & Precautions
Lansoprazole may hide the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following happen to you before you start taking Lansoprazole or whilst you are taking it, talk to your doctor straightaway:
Taking a proton pump inhibitor like Lansoprazole, especially over a period of more than one year, may slightly increase your risk of fracture in the hip, wrist or spine. Tell the prescriber if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking corticosteroids (which can increase the risk of osteoporosis).
If you get a rash on your skin, especially in areas exposed to the sun tell your doctor as soon as you can as you may need to stop your treatment with Lansoprazole. Remember to also mention any other ill-effects like pain in your joints.
If you are on Lansoprazole for more than three months it is possible that the levels of magnesium in your blood may fall. Low levels of magnesium can be seen as fatigue, involuntary muscle contractions, disorientation, convulsions, dizziness, increased heart rate. If you get any of these symptoms, please tell your doctor promptly. Low levels of magnesium can also lead to a reduction in potassium or calcium levels in the blood. Your doctor may decide to perform regular blood tests to monitor your levels of magnesium.
As with all acid reducing agents, Lansoprazole may lead to a reduced absorption of Vitamin B12.
Tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you are due to have a specific blood test (Chromogranin A).
Driving and using machinery
Lansoprazole is not likely to affect your ability to drive or use any tools or machines, however, side effects such as dizziness, vertigo, tiredness and visual disturbances sometimes occur in patients taking Lansoprazole. If you experience side effects like these, you should not drive or operate machinery as your ability to react may be decreased. You alone are responsible to decide if you are in a fit condition to drive a motor vehicle or perform other tasks that demand increased concentration.
