What is Losec MUPS and how does it work?

Losec MUPS contains the active ingredient Omeprazole which belongs to a group of medicines called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) that reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach by blocking the ‘proton pump’ of parietal cells in the lining of the stomach. This targeted mechanism of action on the final step of acid formation provides for highly effective results.

PPIs are widely used for the treatment of acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion. They can also be used to help prevent ulcers from forming or to assist healing in cases where ulcer formation has already occurred. PPIs can be given in combination with appropriate antibiotics for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori (a type of bacteria that can cause ulcers in the lining of the stomach by weakening the protective mucus coating of the stomach). PPIs are sometimes taken for a rare illness called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome in which the stomach produces too much acid due to a tumour in the pancreas or upper part of the small intestine.

Additional Information

How should I take Losec MUPS?

It is recommended that you take Losec MUPS in the morning although it can be taken at any time of the day. You can take Losec MUPS with food or on an empty stomach, however, taking it before food is preferable.

Tablets should be swallowed whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablets.

Losec MUPS tablets contain specially designed enteric coated pellets. The pellets prevent degradation from stomach acid and help ensure that the medicine is absorbed correctly by your body.

Patients with swallowing difficulties can break the tablet and disperse it in a spoonful of non-carbonated water and if so wished, mix with some fruit juices or applesauce. Patients should be advised that the dispersion should be taken immediately (or within 30 minutes) and always be stirred just before drinking and rinsed down with half a glass of water. DO NOT USE milk or carbonated water. The enteric-coated pellets must not be chewed. Please refer to the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your prescribed medication for more detailed instructions.

If you accidently take more Losec MUPS than prescribed, it is very unlikely to cause any problems. However, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist straight away if you have taken too many and have any of the following symptoms: flushed skin, feeling sweaty, a fast heartbeat, feeling sleepy, blurred vision, feeling confused or agitated.

If you forget to take a dose at your usual time, you can take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome.

Below is a list of the most common and the most serious side effects associated with Losec MUPS. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)

Most people who take Losec MUPS do not suffer any side effects. The following more common side effects tend to be mild and abate when you stop taking Losec MUPS.

  • Headache
  • Effects on your stomach or gut: diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, wind/flatulence
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Benign polyps in the stomach

If you notice any of the following rare but serious Side Effects, stop taking Losec MUPS and contact a doctor immediately:

  • Sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, tongue and throat or body, rash, fainting or difficulties in swallowing (severe allergic reaction)
  • Reddening of the skin with blisters or peeling. There may also be severe blisters and bleeding in the lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals – this could be ‘Stevens-Johnson Syndrome’ or ‘toxic epidermal necrolysis’
  • Yellow skin, dark urine and tiredness which can be symptoms of liver problems

Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Losec MUPS can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Losec MUPS.

Do not take Losec MUPS if you are taking a medicine containing Nelfinavir (used to treat HIV infection).

Tell us if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • Ketoconazole, Itroconazole, Posaconazole or Voriconazole (used to treat infections caused by a fungus)
  • Digoxin (used to treat heart problems)
  • Diazepam (used to treat anxiety, relax muscles or in epilepsy)
  • Phenytoin (used in epilepsy). If you are taking Phenytoin, your doctor will need to monitor you when you start or stop taking Losec MUPS
  • Medicines used to thin the blood, such as Warfarin or other Vitamin K blockers. Your doctor may need to monitor you when you start or stop taking Losec MUPS
  • Rifampicin (used to treat tuberculosis)
  • Atazanavir (used to treat HIV infection)
  • Tacrolimus (in cases of organ transplantation)
  • St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) (used to treat mild depression)
  • Cilostazol (used to treat intermittent claudication)
  • Saquinavir (used to treat HIV infection)
  • Clopidogrel (used to prevent blood clots)
  • Erlotinib (used to treat cancer)
  • Methotrexate (a chemotherapy medicine used in high doses to treat cancer) – if you are taking a high dose of Methotrexate, your doctor may temporarily stop your Losec MUPS treatment

Do not take Losec MUPS:

  • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Omeprazole or any of the other ingredients of Losec MUPS (listed in the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with your medication)
  • If you are allergic to medicines containing other Proton Pump Inhibitors (e.g. Pantoprazole, Lansoprazole, Rabeprazole, Esomeprazole)
  • If you are taking a medicine containing Nelfinavir (used for HIV infection)
  • If you are due to have an endoscopy in the next two weeks

Warnings & Precautions

Losec MUPS may hide the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following happen to you before you start taking Losec MUPS or whilst you are taking it, talk to your doctor straightaway:

  • You lose a lot of weight for no reason and have problems swallowing
  • You begin to vomit food or vomit blood
  • You pass black stools (blood-stained faeces)
  • You experience severe or persistent diarrhoea, with symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain or tenderness, as Losec MUPS has been associated with a small increase in infectious diarrhoea
  • You have severe liver problems
  • You experience stomach pain that seems to be getting worse – this can be a sign of an inflamed liver or pancreas
  • You have ever had a skin reaction after treatment with a medicine similar to Losec MUPS that reduces stomach acid

Taking a proton pump inhibitor like Losec MUPS, especially over a period of more than one year, may slightly increase your risk of fracture in the hip, wrist or spine. Tell the prescriber if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking corticosteroids (which can increase the risk of osteoporosis).

If you get a rash on your skin, especially in areas exposed to the sun tell your doctor as soon as you can as you may need to stop your treatment with Losec MUPS. Remember to also mention any other ill-effects like pain in your joints.

When taking Omeprazole, inflammation in your kidneys may rarely occur. Signs and symptoms include decreased volume of urine or blood in your urine and/or hypersensitivity reactions such as fever, rash, and joint stiffness. You should report any such signs to your GP.

If you take Losec MUPS for more than three months, it is possible that the levels of magnesium in your blood may fall. Low levels of magnesium can cause fatigue, involuntary muscle contractions, disorientation, convulsions, dizziness, and increased heart rate. If you get any of these symptoms, please tell your doctor promptly. Low levels of magnesium can also lead to a reduction in potassium or calcium levels in the blood. Your doctor may decide to perform regular blood tests to monitor your levels of magnesium.

As with all acid reducing agents, Losec MUPS may lead to a reduced absorption of Vitamin B12.

Tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you are due to have a specific blood test (Chromogranin A).

Driving and using machinery

Losec MUPS is not likely to affect your ability to drive or use any tools or machines. If side effects such as dizziness and visual disturbances occur, you should not drive or operate machinery.
