Used to treat Acid Reflux & Heartburn

Fast and highly effective inhibition of stomach acid secretion

Rapid absorption and relief of symptoms

What is Nizatidine and how does it work?

Nizatidine belongs to a group of medicines called Histamine H2-Receptor Antagonists which reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach.

Histamine is a chemical that is naturally produced by certain cells in the body, including cells in the lining of the stomach called enterochromaffin-like cells (ECL cells). Histamine released from ECL cells stimulates the acid-producing parietal cells in the stomach lining to release acid. H2-Receptor Antagonists prevent this stimulation thus reducing the amount of acid produced and the resulting aggravating symptoms.

H2-Receptor Antagonists are widely used for the treatment of acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion. They can also be used to help prevent ulcers from forming or to assist healing in cases where ulcer formation has already occurred. H2-Receptor Antagonists are also given in combination with appropriate antibiotics for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori (a type of bacteria that can cause ulcers in the lining of the stomach by weakening the protective mucus coating of the stomach). H2-Receptor Antagonists are sometimes taken for a rare illness called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome in which the stomach produces too much acid due to a tumour in the pancreas or upper part of the small intestine.

Additional Information

How should I take Nizatidine?

The usual adult dose is 150-300mg twice daily. It is recommended that Nizatidine capsules be swallowed whole with water before or after meals. Nizatidine can be taken with or without food, however, if you get symptoms whenever you eat or drink, it is advisable to take it 30-60 minutes before having a drink, snack or meal.

If you accidentally take more Nizatidine than prescribed contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department immediately. Signs of an overdose may include watery eyes, increased saliva, being sick, narrowing of the pupils of the eyes and diarrhoea. Take the carton or container and any remaining capsules with you.

If you forget to take a dose at your usual time, you can take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome.

Below is a list of the most common and the most serious side effects associated with Nizatidine. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.

Common side effects

Most people who take Nizatidine do not suffer any side effects. The following more common side effects tend to be mild and abate when you stop taking Nizatidine.

  • Sweating
  • Sleepiness

If any of the following occur after taking Nizatidine, stop taking it and tell your doctor immediately:

  • Allergic reactions, the signs of which may include rash, itching or hives on the skin.
Swelling of your face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body. Chest pain, shortness of breath, wheezing or having trouble breathing. Unexplained fever and feeling faint, especially when standing up
  • Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin, dark urine, pale coloured bowel movements and itching ca be the result of problems with your liver
  • Bruising more easily and bleeding (particularly of the mouth and nose. In severe cases, blood in the urine or faeces and headaches due to low platelets in your blood
  • Frequent infections such as fever, severe chills, sore throat or mouth ulcers may be due to lack of white blood cells

These side effects are rare but serious. You may need urgent medical attention.

Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Nizatidine can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Nizatidine.

Tell us if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • A medicine called a salicylate (i.e. aspirin), normally used to relieve minor aches and pains

Do not take Nizatidine:

  • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Nizatidine or any of the other ingredients of Nizatidine (listed in the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with your medication)
  • If you have taken a similar anti-ulcer medicine before and you suffered an unusual or allergic reaction
  • If you are due to have an endoscopy in the next two weeks

Nizatidine isn’t suitable for some people. To make sure that it is safe for you, tell the prescriber if you:

  • Have had an allergic reaction to Nizatidine or any other medicines in the past
  • Have kidney/liver problems
  • Have gastric cancer

If you’re due to have an endoscopy to find out what’s causing your symptoms, stop taking Nizatidine at least 2 weeks before your procedure. This is because Nizatidine may hide some of the problems that would usually be spotted during an endoscopy.

Nizatidine should only be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding if considered by your doctor to be absolutely necessary, and then with caution. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Warnings & Precautions

Nizatidine may hide the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following happen to you before you start taking Nizatidine or whilst you are taking it, talk to your doctor straightaway:

  • You lose a lot of weight for no reason and have problems swallowing
  • You begin to vomit food or vomit blood
  • You pass black stools (blood-stained faeces)
  • You experience severe or persistent diarrhoea, with symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain or tenderness, as Nizatidine has been associated with a small increase in infectious diarrhoea
  • You have severe liver problems
  • You experience stomach pain that seems to be getting worse – this can be a sign of an inflamed liver or pancreas

As with all acid reducing agents, Nizatidine may lead to a reduced absorption of Vitamin B12.

Driving and using machinery

Nizatidine should not have an influence on your ability to drive or use machinery. If side effects such as dizziness and visual disturbances do occur, you should not drive or operate machinery.
