✔ Used to safely and effectively delay your period
✔ Synthetic version of Progesterone
✔ Can delay periods for up to 17 days
✔ Perfect for special occasions, holidays, and important events
✔ Can also help to reduce the severity of premenstrual symptoms
Norethisterone is a synthetic form of the female hormone Progesterone.
During a woman’s menstrual cycle, the level of Progesterone fluctuates. At the time before a period starts, there is a drop in the level of Progesterone, which triggers menstruation.
Norethisterone works by artificially maintaining elevated Progesterone levels, this in turn prevents the womb lining from shedding and delays your period.
Before taking Norethisterone, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information about the tablets and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience from taking them.
The recommended dose for delaying a period is 5mg, three times daily. Tablets should be started 3 days before the expected start date of your period. You should continue taking the tablets for as long as you wish to delay your period, up to a maximum of 20 days in total (meaning you can delay your period for up to 17 days). After you stop taking the tablets, your period will likely start after two or three days, although this timeline can vary for each individual.
Norethisterone will alter the dates of your menstrual cycle. By taking Norethisterone, your period will be delayed by up to 17 days, depending on how long you take it. The day your period restarts is your new cycle date. You can expect your next period to occur approximately 30 days after this new start date.
Norethisterone can have a number of other benefits. Not only can it change when your period occurs, it can also make your bleeding lighter and your period less painful. The additional hormones can also help to reduce the number and severity of premenstrual symptoms, such as mood swings, bloating/stomach aches, headaches, or changes to your skin or hair.
A few women may suffer light bleeding or spotting whilst taking Period Delay treatment, but the vast majority will not experience any bleeding at all.
Norethisterone does not function as a contraceptive when taken for Period Delay, so it is therefore important to continue to use contraceptive methods if you do not wish to become pregnant. You should not take Norethisterone if you are already using the Combined Contraceptive Pill.
Norethisterone should not be used to delay your period more than once every 6 months.
Norethisterone is not suitable for women with a history of blood clots, unexplained vaginal bleeding, or liver or heart problems. Additionally, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take Norethisterone.
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.
Stop taking Norethisterone and seek immediate medical attention if:
The following symptoms could be warning signs of Thrombosis (a blood clot) which requires urgent treatment:
Symptoms of a blood clot in the lungs (Pulmonary Embolism):
Symptoms of a blood clot in the brain (Stroke):
Symptoms of a deep-vein thrombosis (DVT):
Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Norethisterone can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Norethisterone. In the event of a medical emergency, you should tell your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse that you have taken Norethisterone tablets and when you did. Do not take Norethisterone tablets with other medicines unless your doctor tells you that you can.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines:
Do not take Norethisterone:
Warnings & Precautions
