Propecia contains the active ingredient Finasteride which belongs to a class of medications known as 5α-Reductase Inhibitors (5-ARIs). These medicines work by inhibiting the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by the enzyme 5α-Reductase.
Exposure to DHT causes hair follicles to shrink, weaken, and eventually stop functioning, preventing hair growth. Propecia acts to reduce levels of DHT in the scalp, helping to reverse the balding process and prevent further hair loss.
When taken daily, Propecia can be highly effective in reversing the effects of Male Pattern Baldness. It helps prevent the thinning of hair follicles and is even thought to increase the number of hairs, thereby enhancing the overall appearance. In one study, 90% of men who took Finasteride once a day for six months halted their hair loss, and 60% even experienced regrowth of lost hair.
5-ARIs normally take three to six months of consistent use before any effects are observed and up to one to two years for full hair growth, this is due to the natural growth cycles of hair follicles. 5-ARIs are not a permanent solution to hair loss, so any positive effects will be reversed if treatment is stopped.
Before taking Propecia, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information about the tablets and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience from taking them.
The recommended dose is one 1mg tablet daily. Tablets should be swallowed whole and can be taken on an empty stomach or with a meal. Taking more than the recommended dose will not increase the effectiveness of treatment.
Male pattern hair loss is a condition that develops over a long period of time. In general, daily use for three to six months may be necessary before you notice any increase in hair density or reduction in hair loss. If you stop taking Propecia, you are likely to lose the hair you have gained within 9 to 12 months.
If you accidently take more Propecia than prescribed, you may experience an increase in side effects and their severity. Contact your doctor if you take more tablets than you should.
