Propranolol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist, more commonly referred to as a beta-blocker.
Propranolol is effective in managing the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as heart palpitations, sweating, shortness of breath, and shaking. By slowing the heart rate and blocking the effects of adrenaline, it helps patients remain calm and prevents anxiety from taking hold. Propranolol can be taken when required before a stressful situation or on a more regular basis if required.
Before taking Propranolol, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information about Propranolol and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience from taking it.
The recommended dose for Situational Anxiety is 10-40mg, taken about half an hour before the situation or event that you are worried about begins. The dosage may be increased according to individual response, up to a maximum of 40mg, three times daily. Tablets should be swallowed with a drink of water.
Propranolol can be severely toxic if taken in overdose. If you have accidently taken more than the prescribed dose or are experiencing symptoms of overdose, you should seek urgent medical attention immediately.
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome.
