Rabeprazole belongs to a group of medicines called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) which reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach by blocking the ‘proton pump’ of parietal cells in the lining of the stomach. This targeted mechanism of action on the final step of acid formation provides for highly effective results.
PPIs are widely used for the treatment of acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion. They can also be used to help prevent ulcers from forming or to assist healing in cases where ulcer formation has already occurred. PPIs can be given in combination with appropriate antibiotics for the treatment of Helicobacter pylori (a type of bacteria that can cause ulcers in the lining of the stomach by weakening the protective mucus coating of the stomach). PPIs are sometimes taken for a rare illness called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome in which the stomach produces too much acid due to a tumour in the pancreas or upper part of the small intestine.
The usual adult dose is 10-20mg daily. It is recommended that you take Rabeprazole in the morning although it can be taken at any time of the day. You can take Rabeprazole with food or on an empty stomach, however, taking it before food is preferable. Rabeprazole should be swallowed whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablets.
If you accidentally take more Rabeprazole than prescribed, it is very unlikely to cause any problems. However, you should talk to your doctor or pharmacist straight away if you have taken too many and have any of the following symptoms: flushed skin, feeling sweaty, a fast heartbeat, feeling sleepy, blurred vision, feeling confused or agitated.
If you forget to take a dose at your usual time, you can take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome.
Below is a list of the most common and the most serious side effects associated with Rabeprazole. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.
Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)
Most people who take Rabeprazole do not suffer any side effects. The following more common side effects tend to be mild and abate when you stop taking Rabeprazole.
If you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects, stop taking Rabeprazole and contact a doctor immediately:
Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Rabeprazole can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Rabeprazole.
Do not take Rabeprazole if you are taking a medicine containing Atazanavir (used to treat HIV infection).
Tell us if you are taking any of the following medicines:
Do not take Rabeprazole:
Rabeprazole is not usually recommended during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is always better to try to treat your symptoms without taking medication when possible. A medicine called Omeprazole, which is similar to Rabeprazole, is considered safe in pregnancy/breastfeeding so may be a more suitable alternative.
Warnings & Precautions
Rabeprazole may hide the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following happen to you before you start taking Rabeprazole or whilst you are taking it, talk to your doctor straightaway:
Taking a proton pump inhibitor like Rabeprazole, especially over a period of more than one year, may slightly increase your risk of fracture in the hip, wrist or spine. Tell the prescriber if you have osteoporosis or if you are taking corticosteroids (which can increase the risk of osteoporosis).
If you get a rash on your skin, especially in areas exposed to the sun tell your doctor as soon as you can as you may need to stop your treatment with Rabeprazole. Remember to also mention any other ill-effects like pain in your joints.
If you take Rabeprazole for more than three months, it is possible that the levels of magnesium in your blood may fall. Low levels of magnesium can cause fatigue, involuntary muscle contractions, disorientation, convulsions, dizziness, and increased heart rate. If you get any of these symptoms, please tell your doctor promptly. Low levels of magnesium can also lead to a reduction in potassium or calcium levels in the blood. Your doctor may decide to perform regular blood tests to monitor your levels of magnesium.
As with all acid reducing agents, Rabeprazole may lead to a reduced absorption of Vitamin B12.
Tell your doctor before taking this medicine if you are due to have a specific blood test (Chromogranin A).
Driving and using machinery
It is unlikely that Rabeprazole will affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Occasionally Rabeprazole can cause sleepiness, therefore, driving and operating complex machinery should be avoided if you are affected.
