✔ Used to treat Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

✔ Generic version of Levitra

✔ Works in 30-60 minutes

✔ Lasts up to 6 hours

✔ Most effective ED treatment in over 50s

What is Vardenafil and how does it work?

Vardenafil belongs to a group of medicines called Phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors which are used as a first-line treatment option for Erectile Dysfunction (ED).

PDE5 inhibitors function by relaxing and widening (dilating) blood vessels in your penis. This helps to improve blood flow to the penis when you are sexually aroused. Even if the nerves or blood vessels going to the penis are not working so well, PDE5 inhibitors can increase the blood flow and facilitate an erection.

PDE5 inhibitors have about an 8 in 10 chance of working well, however, it should be noted that they will not cause an erection unless you are sexually aroused or stimulated.

Studies show that Vardenafil is more effective than other ED treatments in men over 50, as well as those with health risks such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.

Additional Information

How should I take Vardenafil?

Vardenafil is available from PrescriptionPad as 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg Tablets.

Before taking Vardenafil, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information about the tablets and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience from taking them.

The usual recommended starting dose is 10mg. This can be increased or decreased depending on its effect and how you react.

The amount of time that Vardenafil takes to work varies from person to person, but it normally takes between half an hour to one hour.

Vardenafil is intended to be taken before sexual activity – it is NOT for continuous daily use. You should take one tablet approximately 25–60 minutes before sexual activity, although it may still be effective up to six hours after taking the tablet. You should not take more than one dose of Vardenafil in any 24-hour period.

You and your partner will still need to engage in foreplay, just as you would if you were not taking a medicine for ED. Vardenafil will not cause an erection unless you are sexually aroused.

Normal tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water or juice (but not grapefruit juice). It is recommended that you do not drink grapefruit juice with Vardenafil as there is a chemical in grapefruit juice which can increase the amount of Vardenafil in your bloodstream and this makes side-effects more likely.

Vardenafil can be taken with or without food, but preferably not after a heavy or high-fat meal as this may delay the effect.

You should not drink large amounts of alcohol before you plan to take Vardenafil. Drinking too much alcohol can reduce your ability to get an erection and this may prevent you from getting the maximum benefit from the tablets.

You should not take Vardenafil if you are using any other products or taking any other medicines to treat Erectile Dysfunction.

If Vardenafil tablets do not help you to get an erection or if your erection does not last long enough for satisfactory sexual intercourse, you should inform your doctor. Similarly, if you feel that the tablets are too strong for you, discuss this with your doctor as your dose may need to be reduced.

If you accidently take more Vardenafil than prescribed, you may experience an increase in side effects and their severity. Contact your doctor if you take more tablets than you should.

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome.

Below is a list of the most common side effects associated with Vardenafil. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.

Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people)

  • Headache

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)

The following more common side effects tend to be mild and of a short duration.

  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Indigestion

Please tell the prescriber if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. This is because Vardenafil can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Vardenafil. In the event of a medical emergency, you should tell your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse that you have taken Vardenafil tablets and when you did. Do not take Vardenafil tablets with other medicines unless your doctor tells you that you can.

You should not take Vardenafil if you are taking medicines called Nitrates such as Glyceryl Trinitrate (GTN), as the combination of these medicines may potentially lead to a dangerous fall in your blood pressure. Always tell your prescriber if you are taking any of these medicines that are often used for the relief of angina. You should also avoid taking Vardenafil if you are using Nitric Oxide Donors such as Amyl Nitrite (Poppers).

Patients that take Alpha-blockers (Doxazosin, Indoramin, Terazosin or Prazosin) for the treatment of high blood pressure or prostate enlargement may experience dizziness or light-headedness caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure. In order to reduce the chance of these symptoms occurring, patients should be on a stabilised, regular daily dose of their Alpha-blocker before taking Vardenafil.
