What is Wegovy and how does it work?

Wegovy is a revolutionary, once-weekly self-injectable pen for weight loss, offering a convenient and highly effective solution for those seeking to manage their weight.

Wegovy contains the active ingredient Semaglutide. This is a synthetic version of the hormone Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is naturally released from the gut in response to eating. GLP-1 plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels, slowing down the emptying of the stomach (gastric emptying), and signalling fullness to the brain. By stimulating this hormone, Wegovy can enhance these natural processes, helping to suppress appetite, prevent cravings, and support weight loss.

If prescribed, it is essential to use Wegovy in conjunction with healthy lifestyle changes, such as increased physical activity and a reduced-calorie diet. These adjustments work synergistically with the medication to maximise weight loss and improve overall health outcomes.

Additional Information

Who can use Wegovy?

Wegovy is suitable for weight loss in adults with:

  • a BMI of 30kg/m² or above (obese)
  • a BMI of 27kg/m² or above (overweight) with at least one weight-related health problem, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or sleep apnoea

You should not use Wegovy if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the injection, especially Semaglutide. Additionally, Wegovy is not recommended for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should stop taking Wegovy at least two months before trying to get pregnant. These restrictions are in place because weight loss medications can lead to serious health risks and severe side effects when used inappropriately or in unsuitable populations.

Speak to your doctor before using Wegovy if you have any of the following conditions. These conditions may require additional precautions or adjustments to your treatment plan:

  • a severe health condition affecting stomach emptying, such as severe gastroparesis
  • an eye condition, such as diabetic retinopathy
  • a history of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)

Interactions with other medications and food/drink

Wegovy may interact with other medications, so it’s important to speak to your doctor if you take any prescription or over-the-counter medications, or herbal remedies. Be sure to inform your doctor if you are using another diabetes medication, particularly Insulin or a Sulphonylurea, as adjustments may be necessary to avoid complications.

No specific food or drink interacts with Wegovy, but it’s advisable to limit excessive alcohol consumption. Alcohol can influence blood sugar levels and weight, potentially reducing the effectiveness of Wegovy.

It’s essential to provide a complete medical history and details of any conditions or medications you’re taking when filling out our online questionnaire. This information helps us ensure that the weight loss treatment prescribed is both suitable and safe for you.

Weight loss is a highly individual process, and some people may lose weight more quickly than others. Wegovy can help initiate weight loss from the first dose when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Clinical trials have demonstrated that, on average, patients lost up to 15% of their original body weight on the highest dose of Wegovy (2.4mg). Additionally, the majority of adults (~90%) can expect to lose at least 5% of their body weight after six months of treatment, making it an effective option for a wide range of individuals seeking significant weight loss results.

Several studies have investigated the effectiveness of Wegovy as a weight loss treatment, leading to its approval in the UK for this purpose. One of the most significant studies, the STEP 1 clinical trial, demonstrated that after 68 weeks of treatment:

  • 83.5% of adults lost more than 5% of their body weight
  • 66.1% of adults lost more than 10% of their body weight
  • 47.9% of adults lost more than 15% of their body weight
  • 30.2% of adults lost more than 20% of their body weight

The key to successful weight loss is focusing on a healthy and sustainable approach. When using Wegovy, aim for gradual weight loss of 1-2 pounds (around 0.5 to 1 kg) per week by following a reduced-calorie diet and increasing physical activity.

Wegovy starts to work in your body immediately, though it might take a few days until you notice the full effect of its impact on your appetite and eating habits. The dosage will be increased gradually to minimise side effects. You should start to see noticeable improvements to your weight within 5-6 weeks.

Wegovy is designed as a long-term treatment – you should expect to see significant weight loss results from around 6 months with continuous use, with maximum weight loss generally occurring between 12 and 18 months (depending on dosage levels and other lifestyle adjustments). You should speak to your prescriber if you don’t see any weight loss results within 6 months of taking Wegovy.

You’ll get the best effect from this medication when taking it alongside healthy lifestyle changes, such as eating a balanced diet, reducing snacking between meals, and exercising for 150 minutes a week.

Wegovy follows a structured dosing schedule to gradually increase your dose, which helps minimise common side effects like nausea and vomiting and gives the best chance for long-term success. Regardless of your current dose, you will only ever need to take one dose per week.

Treatment always starts with the 0.25mg dose once a week for the first 4 weeks. After this, the dose increases to 0.5mg per week for another 4 weeks. Following this period, your dose will be increased every 4 weeks until you reach the maximum maintenance dose of 2.4mg. You will be guided on when to increase your dose, based on how well you’re tolerating the medication and how effective it is for you.

If everything goes as planned and you tolerate the treatment well, your dosing schedule will look like this:

Month

Weekly Dose

1

0.25mg (starting dose)

2

0.5mg

3

1.0mg

4

1.7mg

5+

2.4mg (maintenance dose)

It’s important to remember that everyone responds differently to treatment, and there’s no rush to increase your dose. You should only increase your dosage when you feel ready. If you’d prefer to stay at the same dose for an additional month or two, or even permanently, that’s perfectly fine! You can also decrease the dose if you find that you’re not tolerating a higher dose well after your first month.

Dose increases should only happen if you’re tolerating your current dose without side effects and want to accelerate your weight loss. However, if you’re happy with your current weight loss and tolerating the dose well, it’s completely acceptable to remain on that dose for as long as necessary. If you experience any side effects, you should either stay on your current dose or consider reducing it. Feel free to contact our clinical team for further guidance.

Wegovy comes in an easy-to-use, prefilled multi-dose injection pen. Each Wegovy FlexTouch pen contains four doses of the same strength. You inject Wegovy under the skin (subcutaneously) of your stomach, thigh, or upper arm. Don’t worry, it’s actually much simpler than it sounds and if we prescribe Wegovy for you, we’ll provide you with clear, step-by-step instructions on how to use it.

You can watch a detailed video that explains how the pen should be prepared and injected here.

You should inject your dose of Wegovy once a week, on the same day and at the same time. This helps keep the levels of Semaglutide steady in your bloodstream, reducing the risk of side effects and enhancing its effectiveness.

It’s important to change injection sites regularly to prevent skin irritation. You can inject in the same general area, but be sure to choose a different spot in that area each time. Always use a new needle for each injection and make sure to use a sharps bin for safe disposal.

You should check your pen and needle for signs of damage and do not use it if it’s unsealed or bent. You should also check the liquid for discolouration or cloudiness; if it isn’t clear, you may need to use a new pen.

Before administering your dose, make sure that you’ve got the correct medication and dose according to the Wegovy dosing schedule. This is especially important if you take other injectable medications like insulin.

Wegovy FlexTouch Usage Instructions:

  • Wash your hands and the injection site with warm soapy water to prevent contaminating the needle

  • Remove the pen cap and look through the small viewing window, where you can see the Wegovy liquid in the pen. Make sure that the liquid is clear and colourless. If it is not, do not use this pen

  • Push a new needle onto the pen and remove the caps. You should always use a fresh needle with every dose to prevent contamination or infection. Never reuse a needle or use a needle that’s unsealed, bent, or broken

  • If it’s your first time using this pen, you’ll need to check the flow. You can do this by turning the dose selector on the end of the pen until you reach the ‘flow check’ symbol (2 dots and a line). When you press the button, a small droplet of Wegovy should form on the tip of the needle. If it does not, you may need to replace the needle or use a new pen

  • You are now ready to set your dose. Turn the dose selector until you reach your prescribed dose

  • Insert the needle into your skin and press the button, holding it down until the number on the dose counter reaches 0. Continue holding the button down after it reaches 0, and then count to 6. This makes sure all of the medication is properly injected

  • Remove the needle slowly from your skin, and then dispose of the needle in a sharps bin

Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.

The side effects of Wegovy are typically mild and tend to improve over time. They are most likely to occur when you first start taking Wegovy or during dose increases. To help minimise these effects, Wegovy is introduced gradually, giving your body time to adjust to the treatment. This approach helps ensure a smoother experience while using the medication.

Stop using Wegovy and seek medical help immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

Common (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)

  • Complications of diabetic eye disease (diabetic retinopathy). If you have diabetes you should inform your doctor if you experience eye problems, such as changes in vision, during treatment with Wegovy

Uncommon (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)

  • Inflamed pancreas (acute pancreatitis) which could cause severe pain in the stomach and/or back which does not go away, with or without persistent vomiting. You should see a doctor immediately if you experience such symptoms
  • Kidney or bladder stones. Signs may include back or lower abdomen pain, difficulty urinating, or change in the colour of urine

Rare (may affect up to 1 in 1000 people)

  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g. anaphylactic reaction, angioedema). You should get immediate medical help and inform your doctor if you experience symptoms such as breathing problems, rapid swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat with difficulty swallowing, wheezing, fast heartbeat, pale and cold skin, feeling dizzy or weak
  • Hip fractures

Frequency unknown

  • Bowel obstruction. A severe form of constipation with additional symptoms such as stomach ache, bloating, vomiting etc.

Very common side effects (may affect more than 1 in 10 people)

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain
  • Feeling weak or tired

Common side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10 people)

  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Upset stomach or indigestion
  • Acid reflux and indigestion symptoms – bloating, gas, burping

  • Hair loss
  • Injection site reactions (e.g. irritation, itching, or redness)
  • Change in sense of taste
  • Change in skin sensation
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) – in patients with diabetes

The warning signs of low blood sugar may come on suddenly. They can include: cold sweat, cool pale skin, headache, fast heartbeat, feeling sick or very hungry, changes in vision, feeling sleepy or weak, feeling nervous, anxious or confused, difficulty concentrating or shaking. Your doctor will tell you how to treat low blood sugar and what to do if you notice these warning signs. Low blood sugar is more likely to happen if you also take a Sulphonylurea or Insulin. Your doctor may reduce your dose of these medicines before you start using Wegovy.

Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)

  • Fast heartbeat
  • Increased levels of pancreatic enzymes (such as lipase and amylase) in blood
  • Delay in the emptying of the stomach
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) – in patients without diabetes
  • Increased levels of bilirubin in the blood. Signs include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)

Common Wegovy side effects are usually mild and are likely to lessen or even disappear after your body gets used to the treatment. We understand that it’s still tough to live with these discomforts though and so we’ve put together some tips for managing these where possible:

  • Make sure to inject yourself at the same time and day each week so your body has a regular interval between each dose
  • Only take the dose prescribed to you and avoid increasing your dose unless you are told to do so by a healthcare professional
  • Stay well hydrated
  • Avoid fatty foods and heavy meals
  • Stop eating when you feel full
  • Exercise regularly
  • Manage nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea symptoms by sipping water, avoiding greasy, heavy meals, and eating smaller meals more regularly. It may also help to avoid anything that smells or tastes too strong. You can take anti-diarrhoea tablets if needed
  • If you’re struggling with constipation, increase your fibre intake, stay well hydrated and try eating small fruits such as prunes, figs, or grapes. Make sure you’re also getting regular activity, such as going on short walks
  • To ease a headache, spend time in a quiet space to relax, take a simple pain relief medicine like paracetamol, drink plenty of water, and try relaxation techniques such as meditation and scalp massage

It is important to inform your doctor know if you experience any side effects that persist or cause discomfort. They can provide guidance on how to manage these symptoms or adjust your treatment plan if necessary.

You should store your Wegovy pen in the refrigerator at a temperature of 2°C to 8°C before use. Once opened, you can either continue storing it in the refrigerator or in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight, as long as the temperature remains below 30°C.

Pens should be discarded no later than 6 weeks (42 days) after first use. Always keep the pen cap on when the pen is not in use to protect it from light exposure.

Important reminders:

  • Do not store Wegovy in the freezer. If the medication inside freezes, it should not be used, even after thawing
  • Dispose of needles in a sharps bin after use
  • Always keep medicines out of reach of children and vulnerable adults

The starting dose of Wegovy is always 0.25mg for the first 4 weeks. Even if you’re switching from another weight loss injection or have taken Wegovy in the past, you’ll still begin with this dose.

The dosage will then increase every four weeks (or as advised by your prescriber) until you reach your maximum maintenance dose of 2.4mg. The highest dose generally leads to the most significant weight loss, but results depend on how your body responds to the medication and any side effects that you may experience.

Important: Never increase your dose beyond what your prescriber recommends, as this increases the risk of severe side effects, potential illness, and could cause you to pause or stop treatment, which may slow your weight loss progress.

You inject Wegovy under the skin (subcutaneously) of your stomach, thigh, or upper arm. If you choose to inject in your stomach, leave at least a 5cm gap from the belly button. You may need help from someone else if you want to inject in your upper arm.

Don’t worry, the process of injecting is actually much simpler than it sounds and if we prescribe Wegovy for you, we’ll provide you with clear, step-by-step instructions on how to use it.

The timing of when you inject Wegovy doesn’t impact its effectiveness, as it will continue to work until your next dose. However, it’s crucial to administer it on the same day and at the same time each week. Establish a routine that suits your schedule and use a calendar or alarm to remind you when your next dose is due. While you can occasionally adjust the day and time of your injection, this should not be done too frequently to ensure consistency in your treatment.

If you miss a dose of Wegovy, your next steps depend on how much time has passed since your scheduled dose:

  • If it’s been 5 days or less since your missed dose, take it as soon as you remember. You can then continue with your regular dosing schedule, even if this means taking two doses just a few days apart
  • If it’s been more than 5 days, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on your usual scheduled day. Be sure not to take two doses within 2 days of each other

When you stop taking Wegovy, the effects of the medication will gradually wear off. This means you may start feeling hungry again, and if you were using Wegovy to manage blood sugar levels, they are likely to return to their previous state. It’s important to consult your prescriber before stopping Wegovy, as they may recommend gradually reducing your dose to avoid abrupt changes.

Stopping Wegovy too soon could lead to regaining any weight you’ve lost. To maximise the benefits, it’s best to follow the dosing schedule and consult your prescriber if you experience side effects, as they may adjust your dose to help you stay on track.

Everyone responds to Wegovy differently, and weight loss can take time. Studies show that weight loss with Wegovy is often achieved over a longer period. In a 68-week study, participants lost up to 15% of their body weight over 16 months.

Wegovy isn’t a quick fix, so it’s important to continue following a calorie-controlled diet and exercise plan. If you’re tolerating the treatment well, you may need to increase your dose to achieve your desired weight loss. Additionally, ensuring you get enough sleep and managing stress levels can further support your weight loss journey.

A weight loss plateau occurs when you stop losing weight, even while using weight loss injections. Plateaus are common and a normal part of the weight loss process, often caused by your metabolism slowing down in response to your weight loss.

To move past a plateau, it’s important to continue with your healthy habits and use of weight loss injections. Reassess your calorie intake, portion sizes, and ensure you’re maintaining regular exercise. Staying consistent with these habits can help overcome the plateau and restart weight loss progress.

No, Wegovy and Mounjaro are not the same, although they both work similarly as weekly injectable weight loss treatments. Wegovy contains the active ingredient Semaglutide, while Mounjaro contains Tirzepatide. Both are GLP-1 receptor agonists that help reduce hunger and appetite by targeting specific areas of the brain responsible for these processes, however, Mounjaro is also a GIP receptor agonist, meaning it works on a broader range of hormones than Wegovy.

Both medications are approved in the UK and have been proven highly effective for weight loss. Mounjaro, due to its dual action, has shown greater weight loss potential in clinical trials. The choice between Wegovy and Mounjaro depends on how your body responds to the medication.

If you’re currently using another weight loss injection such as Mounjaro or Saxenda, you’ll need to wait one month before switching to Wegovy. This ‘washout’ period allows your body time to eliminate the first drug from your system. Regardless of prior weight loss treatments, all patients starting Wegovy will begin with the lowest dose of 0.25mg. Keep in mind, Wegovy may not be suitable for everyone, even if you’re already using another weight loss medication. During your consultation, we will assess whether Wegovy is the right option for you.

Wegovy is approved for use by the MHRA, the UK government agency responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices are effective and safe. It is safe to purchase Wegovy online, provided you use a trusted and regulated prescribing service like ours. Obtaining Wegovy from an unapproved source that does not review your medical history could be dangerous and is illegal.

For women using oral contraceptives, we recommend switching to a non-hormonal contraceptive or using a barrier method of contraception for four weeks at the start of Wegovy treatment and for four weeks after each dose adjustment. This precaution helps ensure that the effectiveness of your contraception is maintained during these key periods of adjustment.

Warnings & Precautions

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or nurse before using Wegovy if:

  • You have severe problems with food digestion or food remaining in your stomach for longer than normal (including severe gastroparesis)
  • You have ever had pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas which may cause severe pain in the stomach and back which does not go away)
  • You have a problem with your eyes (diabetic retinopathy or macular oedema)
  • You are using a Sulphonylurea (another diabetes medicine) or Insulin for your diabetes, as low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) can occur. Your doctor may need to change your dose of these other medicines to reduce this risk

When starting treatment with Wegovy, in some cases you may experience loss of fluids/dehydration, e.g. due to vomiting, nausea and/or diarrhoea, which may lead to a decrease in kidney function. It is important to avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids. Contact your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.

Pregnancy, Breastfeeding, & Fertility

  • This medicine should not be used during pregnancy as the effects of this medicine on an unborn child are not known. It is recommended to use contraception while using this medicine. If you are a woman with obesity or overweight and are using oral contraceptives, you should consider also using a barrier method of contraception or switching to a non-oral contraceptive method for 4 weeks after starting Wegovy and for 4 weeks after each increase in dose
  • Wegovy is not recommended for use while breastfeeding

Driving and using machinery

It is unlikely that this medicine will affect your ability to drive and use machinery. However, if you use Wegovy in combination with a Sulphonylurea or Insulin, low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) may occur which may reduce your ability to concentrate. Avoid driving or using machines if you get any signs of low blood sugar, e.g. headache, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, feeling hungry, confusion, irritability, fast heartbeat and sweating.
