Zidoval contains the active ingredient Metronidazole. Metronidazole is an antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria and a type of microorganism called protozoa.
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is characterized by an overgrowth of predominantly anaerobic organisms and a loss of lactobacilli. Metronidazole is an effective treatment choice for BV due to its high activity against anaerobic bacteria.
Before using Zidoval, you should read the manufacturer’s printed Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) from inside the pack. It will give you more information and provide you with a full list of the side effects which you may experience.
Zidoval gel is applied inside the vagina where it destroys the bacteria at the site of the infection. The recommended dose of Zidoval gel for BV is one 5g applicatorful inserted into the vagina once daily, at night, for five consecutive days. It is important to complete the course even if you feel better to prevent the infection coming back.
Good hygiene whilst using Zidoval gel is very important. Always: wash your hands before opening the tube or touching the applicators, use a fresh applicator for each dose, immediately throw away each used applicator in a waste bin.
It is important to not drink alcohol while you are using Zidoval and for 48 hours after finishing your course of treatment. This is because drinking alcohol with Metronidazole is likely to make you feel very sick and cause other unpleasant effects, such as palpitations, hot flushes and headache.
Along with their useful effects, most medicines can cause unwanted side effects although not everyone experiences them. The unwanted effects often improve as your body adjusts to the new medicine, but please speak with your doctor or pharmacist if they continue or become troublesome. You will find a full list of possible side effects in the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) supplied with your medicine.

This is because Zidoval can affect the way some medicines work, and some medicines can have an effect on Zidoval. Do not use Zidoval with other medicines unless your doctor tells you that you can.
